About Us

Ukuzinza Business Development (Pty) Ltd (UBD) is B-BBEE consultancy firm and enterprise and supplier development (ESD) incubator. We are passionate about the growth and development of black owned SMME’s, in alignment with Government’s National Development Plan. To facilitate this growth and development we acquire funding from companies in the private sector and provide professional services to these entities to develop them to be sustainable suppliers to our funding partners. This facilitates access to the economy of South Africa and contributes to the upliftment of previously disadvantaged black entrepreneurs and communities.

What does our company represent?

Ukuzinza means Stability in the Zulu language, and that is what our business model encompasses. Economic stability and growth is a fundamental part of our mission statement and considering the economic challenges South Africa faces we are adamant that transformation should be at the forefront of the private sector’s outlook. If not for the private sector’s contribution and investment into the B-BBEE concept we would not be able to drive this process.

What is Enterprise Development

Enterprise development entails, but is not limited to, the investment of time, knowledge and capital into SMME’s to establish, expand and improve financial and operational independence and to promote sustainability. The goal would ideally be to graduate these enterprises to become sustainable suppliers to your company in the future. Companies must spend 1% of their annual net profit after tax to achieve the full 5 points on their B-BBEE scorecard for this element.

Supplier development is the same as Enterprise Development, with the added criteria of the beneficiary entity being on your company’s supply chain. The goal would ideally be for your business to improve their performance for the benefit of any buying organisation, leading to improvements in the total added value from the supplier in terms of product or service offering, business processes and performance, as well as improvements in lead times and delivery. Companies must spend 2% of their annual net profit after tax to achieve the full 10 points on their B-BBEE scorecard for this element.

What is Supplier Development

Mission Statement

We are focused on stabilising and growing enterprises that will graduate to sustainable enterprises, which in turn will lead to job creation, contributing to the economic growth in South Africa.

It is impossible to promote meaningful Enterprise and Supplier Development (ESD) through financial support and access to market alone. Entrepreneurs commonly lack understanding of the most basic of business fundamentals. We recognise the critical need for business skills training and mentorship by implementing appropriate business development services (BDS) alongside other types of financial and non-financial enterprise and supplier development support, for recipients to grow into reliable suppliers.

Vision Statement

Our vision is to be pivotal role-players in economic transformation in local communities and at a national level, through advancing the sustainable growth of entrepreneurial Black businesses.

Core Values
  • Assisting companies with alignment between business stated motivations for Enterprise and Supplier Development and its strategic implementation. This requires a shift from a compliance approach to one driven by outcomes and impact.
  • Bridging the business skills gap of small and emerging businesses.
  • To be a driver in the corporate sector for a collaborative process for devising and sharing Enterprise and Supplier Development best practices and for pooling resources to implement sophisticated, private sector initiatives.

The UBD ESD Incubation Process

UBD has designed a three-phase process to develop successful SMME’s. We assure the client of a structured approach to the review and selection process as well as integrity and transparency in assessing enterprises. We believe that incubation is not a one-year, once off process but rather an ongoing process that will ensure that the enterprise beneficiaries becomes sustainable suppliers.

Phase I

Selection - assess clients’ needs and select enterprise beneficiaries that align to this need.

We begin the process by engaging with Black Owned beneficiaries, to assess their business issues and needs. The result of this engagement should be the identification of entrepreneurs who are committed to persevering and growing their businesses and are willing to be part of phase II.

Phase II

Barriers Assessment - determine enterprise beneficiaries’ barriers to growth and entry.

This phase involves the following:

  • A needs assessment and gap analysis.
  • Developing a project plan.
  • Business insight for the beneficiary.
  • Gathering of supporting data required to ensure that this intervention will benefit under the Enterprise and Supplier Development program as defined in the B-BBBEE codes.

Phase III

UBD Programme - provide a customized intervention that helps the enterprise beneficiaries overcome these barriers.

The programme consists of the following interventions to ensure on-going sustainability and growth of the beneficiary:

  • Business Coaching, Mentoring and Gap Analysis
  • Legal Advice and Services
  • Accounting Services
  • Ad hoc training

The UBD Programme

Enterprise and Supplier Development can only fulfil its purpose when it leads to sustainable businesses that offer financial stability and employment for those who need it the most.

For this reason, we endeavour to empower our Ukuzinza Entrepreneurs by providing them with useful business tools and knowledge to help them safely navigate the South African business world.

We have identified four key areas within business that often cause confusion and uncertainty which inevitably leads to fatal instability.

Our Ukuzinza Entrepreneurs are assisted with the following:

Business Coaching, Mentoring and Gap Analysis

The purpose of the business coaching sessions is to provide the beneficiary with information based on their defined goals.  This service includes but is not limited to: brainstorming techniques, identifying action plans, follow-up procedures to maintain beneficiary motivation, educating the beneficiary as well as asking and answering questions.

The aim of business coaching is to:

  • Do a Gap Analysis.
  • Identify a Purpose and Direction.
  • Provide Advice.
  • Discover, Clarify and Align your goals with what you aim to achieve.
  • Encourage Self-discovery.
  • Elicit Beneficiary-generated Solutions and Strategies, through Mentoring.

Legal Services

South African businesses, whether big or small, are heavily regulated and must comply with a myriad of legal requirements. Non-compliance and ignorance of the law can have significant adverse consequences. For that reason, we provide the beneficiaries with the best legal services and training by utilising our strategic partnerships with legal practitioners specialising in all fields of Commercial and Business Law. We have identified 4 key areas within Business and Commercial Law that we focus on as part of our legal services offering:

  • General Legal Advice and Training
  • Commercial and Employment Contract Revision
  • Compliance Advice
  • Labour Law and Various Other Legal Training

Accounting Services

UBD realises the importance of partnering with an accountant. Beneficiaries are already extremely busy running their own businesses and this means that they will likely not have time to keep their books up to date, and we believe that this is an extremely valuable and important aspect of running a successful business.

Our in-house accountant provides the following services to our beneficiaries:

  • General Accounting and Compliance
  • Registration and Compliance with Companies Tax, PAYE and VAT
  • Drafting of Financial Statements and Other Accounting Services
